Summary
The captain of the pirate ship Starling. He first comes off as a mysterious and somewhat eccentric man with a focused aura of purpose. Despite this, his initial goals are a completely disorganized mess of a revenge plot.
History
Aritza was born to a family that had recently settled into a newly conquered farming colony on a planet named The Silo. The family included his parents as well as various aunts/uncles and cousins. As the eldest cousin, he spent his youth working with the farm equipment and taking care of the younger family members. He was also often the one sent to sell the farm’s crops at the orbital market.
He was closest with his cousin Marigold when they were kids. As they got older and more responsibilities fell on them, the pressure was enough to make Marigold want to leave, while Aritza felt like he had to stay. They argued about this multiple times until someone in the family got sick and needed somewhat active care. Marigold felt that this was the final straw for them and they left the Silo, leaving Aritza behind with all the responsibilities.
One day while out at the orbital market, there was an explosion which caused The Silo to fall into pieces and launch debris toward the market. In the chaos, Aritza stole an unlocked trade ship and escaped the market along with about a dozen survivors, losing his left arm to some debris in the process. The Silo was completely destroyed, as was the orbital market.
Aritza and a few of the survivors drove the stolen ship to a neighboring planet and received emergency medical attention there. During the survivors’ arrival, Darift, a traveling cysoma, approached Aritza and chose to stay with him during his recovery. As Aritza regained his strength, he began to plot revenge for whoever was responsible for the tragedy at the Silo, and the two eventually set off toward this goal on the stolen ship from the disaster, the Starling.
During their travels, Aritza managed to find someone to install a robotic arm to replace his lost limb, and began to work out along with his physical therapy. He also started to find information suggesting that the tragedy at The Silo was the direct fault of the Conquest, and so he began secretly boarding Conquest ships for information and to break a few things.
On one Conquest ship, he assisted a human conquest defector named Haven in escaping along with a starmerrow prisoner named Nepristi. Both of which joined the Starling crew.
