Wick

Summary

A bounty hunter sent after Aritza. Initially a serious threat, as he appears to have a lot of information about the Starling crew. However, his physical strength is lacking, leading to him being unable to best Aritza in combat, and making him far less of a threat to the crew once they knew him.

History

Wick was born as Jay Bishop, to an extended family living in a mining settlement. His family did not have a lot of money, and lived in housing provided by [Mining Company]. The company gave this housing to families as long as they sent a certain number of their family to be employees working in the mines or factories, the only exception to this being if they didn't have enough people who were old enough or physically able (by company standards) to work. This deal was multigenerational, and led to Wick’s family being stuck working for the company or risk losing their home and all their money. As older family members became unable to work, younger family members took on the job.

Wick was born with a disease that gave him chronic debilitating migraines, he was weak and prone to getting injured. Unfortunately the illness wasn’t severe enough once he was of age to count him as unable to work. This meant when he was next in line to work, he got skipped, his twin taking up the job instead, much to the distaste of some of his family members, who believed he should work despite his illness. Especially since the company had said he was able to work.

Despite this conflict, Wick was tasked as a caretaker in the home. He still had to do work at home, even if it wasn't the mines or factory. As luck would have it however, soon after Wick’s sibling started to work, there would be an accident in the factory, leading to one of his family members dying. Since the next oldest after Wick’s sibling was too young to work, Wick had to work or risk the family losing their home. This meant he would likely die in the next few years.

Wick instead chose to fake his death and leave the galaxy at age 15, he stopped going by Jay and started using the name Wick. And after traveling a while, he was able to find medication to aid his condition. It is a very expensive medication, but started taking on bounty hunting jobs to pay for it.

Now healthier, he had the choice of going back to his family, and working without the risk of his illness taking him away so soon. He chose instead not to go back, as it wouldn't really help their situation much, and also because part of him resented his family for being so willing to let him die, even if there wasn’t much of a choice.

Once he made his decision, his goal shifted to getting rich as fast as possible, in order to retire early and never have to work again. He spent every moment of his time doing jobs, and slowly began to save up.

Eventually he got a job offer he couldn’t refuse, he was offered it directly, instead of having to find it in the bounty system, and the pay was enough to complete goal. All he had to do was capture Aritza and bring him back alive.

His nose is crooked from Aritza breaking it the first time they met. He has short white hair and dark eyes.

Personality

Wick initially comes off as a very selfish individual. His goal at first is to get enough money to retire early in a space city. For this he has no moral objections to killing in his bounty hunter job, and takes pride in how good he is at the job. He is confident and arrogant, which leads to him not making any backup plans (he’s never needed any until meeting Aritza).

He does appear to have some morals, as he will often do things that seem counter to his plans to avoid hurting those who aren’t his target. He also does his best to follow the laws of whatever settlement he’s at.

Over time, Wick starts to grow more unsure of himself. Through the events of the story, he begins to care for Aritza and the rest of the Starling crew. Eventually, he completely gives up on his initial goal and devotes himself to helping the pirates. During this, he is shown to be very capable of being considerate and kind to others (mainly with Haven), though he still maintains his arrogant teasing when he can get away with it.

Abilities/Skills

Stealth/Agility:
Wick is able to hide and evade others easily, he uses this often for recon in his bounty hunter job. This skill also translates to the way he drives ships, leading to this knowledge being used by him as part of the Starling crew to avoid capture and reach destinations quicker later in the story.

Tracking/Recon:
Wick has knowledge of various mathematical methods for tracking other ships and people in the galaxies. He is also capable of gathering information on people quickly.

Acting:
Wick is a good liar/actor, and often puts on a persona to aid in his jobs. This is useful for luring people away from crowds, lowering their guard, etc. This is also his biggest weakness as he relies on this skill for his plans, and so when his cover is blown he doesn’t have much to fall back on.

General Combat:
In order to do the bounty hunter job, Wick trained in various weapons and fighting methods. He is very average at combat, but he is able to use guns, knives, swords, as well as his body for fighting (though his strength leaves a lot to be desired, so he often chooses to go with a weapon rather than his fists).

Hacking/Technology:
Wick often uses tech to find the information he needs in his jobs. Hacking into security cameras is something he can do easily.
